"Capture, edit, and annotate screenshots on Mac"
Dec 3, 2019 by Jane

With integrated screen capture tools available for Mac users, it might seem peculiar to be wanting to pay fifty dollars for a program like Snagit. The thing is that this software comes packed full of advanced options the basic built-in utility simply cannot offer. Snagit can capture the desktop, windows, scrolling windows, and custom areas and provides handy editing tools to alter, annotate, and enhance your images.

Key features

Create GIF animations from captured pieces of video, add text, arrows, icons, and stamps to one or more screenshots. Emphasize certain points by magnifying and zooming in to a piece of text. Share your edited images via the web, email, or FTP and drag and drop them straight into other programs, like Office or iWork. Choose from a broad array of effects, add watermarks, preview your images and copy them to clipboard, enable cursor capturing as well as time delay functions.

Platforms and license

Snagit is available for Windows and Mac. Moreover, the licensing allows you to use the same serial number on both platforms, which is quite handy and cost-saving if your job requires that you work with Mac as well as Windows screenshots.

Drawbacks

However, there are some minor downsides in Snagit for Mac we would like to point out. First, there is no option to change the default file format of an image without opening it in the built-in editor. And second, we would like to have images automatically named with a prefix and a sequence number and not with a timestamp.

Snagit vs. Rival tools

There are plenty of editing options offered in Snagit, still it cannot combine videos and insert annotations and animated content into them. If these options seem critical to you then you should try Camtasia. As for the free tools, the most popular competitors of Snagit are LightShot and Greenshot. However, it should be noted that these utilities provide a narrower set of features: LightShot has no freehand tool to cut out a particular shape for capturing while Greenshot doesn’t have any video recording capability.

Conclusion

Overall, SnagIt for Mac is one of the best screen capture tools on the market. This powerful and intuitive app comes with tons of options, which make it really worth a high price tag.
